The glossy black glaze is well-preserved, the kiln splashes are still vibrant, and the exposed reddish-brown clay exhibits authentic firing characteristics, natural wear, and clear wheel marks. Private collection, Hong Kong. Description: This well-proportioned gongping yu (fair tea pot) is a classic example of Song Dynasty Jizhou kiln tea porcelain. The body is rounded, slightly narrowing at the bottom, with a short, sloping spout. The ring handle ensures balance and ease of grip. Its compact and elegant shape embodies the refined simplicity favored by Song Dynasty tea culture. The exterior is covered with a glossy black glaze, adorned with naturally formed white and light blue kiln splashes, adding to its vibrancy. These irregular patterns, formed entirely during the firing process, resemble a starry night sky, making each piece unique. On the spout, handle, and lower body, the glaze naturally thinned during firing, revealing the warm reddish-brown clay beneath, creating a striking visual contrast. The unglazed interior showcases the meticulous wheel-throwing technique and retains the original wheel-throwing patterns, highlighting the craftsmanship. The neat, unglazed foot rim also displays the natural characteristics of kiln firing, its reddish hue, and the marks of time, consistent with its preservation over hundreds of years. This piece, shaped on a wheel, coated with black glaze, and finally embellished with splashed-color glaze, was fired once at high temperature, perfectly embodying the essence of Jizhou kiln firing techniques—a naturally beautiful aesthetic. During the Song Dynasty, such vessels were often used to hold brewed tea, making them an indispensable part of the tea ceremony for literati. This work combines practicality and elegance, showcasing outstanding kiln firing art, and is an excellent surviving work of Song Dynasty Jizhou craftsmanship.
