Description: This Yue ware celadon jar with phoenix design from the Five Dynasties period is a representative work of the Yue ware kilns in southern China during the 10th century. The jar has rounded, full shoulders that gradually narrow downwards, and a thick rim. A pair of three-dimensional animal-head handles symmetrically connect to the shoulders. The upper part of the vessel is decorated with a band of molded phoenix patterns, the phoenixes with outstretched wings depicted with lifelike detail. The entire body is covered with a soft grayish-green celadon glaze, with delicate crackle patterns. The foot rim reveals the reddish-brown body. Yue ware was a landmark production area for southern celadon during the Five Dynasties period, exhibiting highly developed techniques. Relief decoration is one of its signature decorative techniques. This jar has a full and powerful shape, with vivid and prominent decoration, perfectly embodying the aesthetic taste of Southern celadon from the Five Dynasties period, combining practicality and aesthetic appeal. The aging of the glaze and the patina are both natural formations over hundreds of years. Its condition is exceptional among similar artifacts, making it an important material for the study of Southern celadon from the Five Dynasties period.
