Provenance: Private collection, California, USA. This piece comes from a renowned American private art collection and has a long history of ownership. Description: This Song Dynasty Jizhou ware water jug showcases the classic black glaze splashed-color decoration technique of Jizhou ware, a famous ceramic center in southern China. The body is rounded like a melon, full in the middle, gradually narrowing downwards, and has a sturdy foot. It has an arched handle on one side and a short, delicate spout on the other. The matching lid is also glazed in the same color and topped with a small pearl-shaped knob, creating a harmonious overall shape. The form is solid and well-proportioned, full of the rustic elegance characteristic of Jizhou ware. The entire vessel is covered in a rich, glossy black glaze, with subtle hints of the natural brown spots characteristic of Jizhou black-glazed ceramics. The body is decorated with a splashed-ink technique, using light brown iron pigment to outline curling floral patterns on the dark glaze. The floral designs blend naturally into the glaze, creating a soft, layered painting effect. The handle, spout, and lid are all covered in the same black glaze, with thinner edges revealing a slightly warm brown earthenware hue. The unglazed base reveals a light beige earthenware color, bearing natural signs of age, surface wear, and dirt stains. A narrow band of dark brown glaze around the foot rim further exemplifies the typical characteristics of Song Dynasty Jizhou ware. This high-temperature fired water jug showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Jizhou black-glazed splashed-ink technique. In the Song Dynasty, such vessels were used not only for holding wine and water but also as elegant home decorations. Its complete shape, well-preserved lid, and clearly visible floral patterns make it an outstanding representative of black-glazed painted ceramics from the Jizhou kiln in the Song Dynasty.
