Dimensions: 50 cm (19.69 inches) in diameter, 4650 g in weight, 15th century. Condition and Provenance: This round plate is in excellent condition overall, with only one ancient, fine crack and no obvious deformation. The plate is engraved with a scene of Shakyamuni Buddha preaching, including the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, disciples, guardian deities, lions, and a treasure canopy; most of the engravings are clearly legible. The surface is covered with a natural bronze patina, and some engravings show signs of age. There are minor chips on the rim. The back retains the original hand-carving marks. There are no modern additions or later welding repairs. This plate was acquired in 2013 by a private collector in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, with the assistance of an antique dealer in Bangkok. The collection archives and original multi-angle photographs are well preserved. Description: This 15th-century round bronze seal, engraved with a scene of Shakyamuni Buddha preaching, is an original sealing component of a large Tibetan Buddhist statue, hammered from a thick sheet of bronze. The front of the Buddha statue depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a lotus throne, preaching. On either side are depictions of bodhisattvas, disciples, and guardian deities. The base is carved with pairs of lions and stupas, while above are canopies and sacred trees, interspersed with cloud and lotus patterns. The entire piece boasts a grand composition, clearly defined figures, and flowing, delicate lines. Such seals were used to seal offerings within large Buddha statues and hold significant religious importance. Well-preserved large seals are extremely rare. This piece fully demonstrates the superb metal carving techniques of 15th-century Tibet and is a precious artifact for studying the consecration customs and iconography of Tibetan Buddhist statues.
