Description: This Northern Qi Buddhist carved brick is an outstanding example of early Chinese Buddhist sculpture, combining dated inscriptions, double niches, and traces of original mineral pigments. The dense, solid rectangular brick, covered with naturally weathered soil tones and weathering marks, reflects centuries of history. The front features two symmetrical pointed arch niches. Between the two niches is a vertical rectangular inscription inscribed with "Tianbao Eight Years," providing important historical information related to the Northern Qi period and Buddhist art. Each niche houses a Shakyamuni Buddha seated in a lotus posture, hands clasped in prayer before him. The Buddha's face is round and serene, clad in layered robes with graceful folds. Remnants of the original red pigment still linger on the robes, adding to their historical charm. On either side of the Buddha stands a bodhisattva, hands clasped in respectful greeting. Their slender figures, simple robes, and flowing lines embody the powerful yet refined style of Northern Qi Buddhist sculpture. The niche edges are decorated with soft cloud patterns, creating a balanced and harmonious scene. The back of the niche retains the original unpainted brick surface, showing signs of manufacture and uneven soil accumulation, contrasting sharply with the meticulously carved decorations on the front. This sculpture, integrating historical inscriptions, Buddhist imagery, and surviving ancient pigments, showcases the artistic spirit of Northern Qi Buddhist religious works. Suitable for both academic appreciation and museum collection, it is an important representative work of early Chinese Buddhist stone carving and religious art.
