Description: This large Tang Dynasty bronze mirror is an outstanding example of the famous "Sea Beast and Grapevine" pattern mirror. It is 28 cm in diameter and weighs 4403 g. The mirror is perfectly round, with a wide, plain frame and a thick, finely cast bronze body. Its surface exhibits a beautiful silvery-grey ancient patina, adorned with natural green corrosion and reddish-brown mineral stains formed over centuries. The back is divided into two main decorative areas, separated by a raised circular border and a beaded pattern. At its center is a tortoise-shaped knob, exquisitely crafted with lifelike details of the tortoise shell, limbs, and textures, creating a striking yet elegant visual focal point. The inner ring surrounding the knob is decorated with high-relief mythical creatures, phoenixes, birds, grapevines, and floral patterns. These mythical beasts are lifelike and vividly depicted; the phoenixes are layered with feathers and graceful postures. The grapevines meander and intertwine, laden with fruit, leaves, and flowers, all meticulously detailed. The outer decorative band continues the theme of auspicious creatures perched among lush grapevines, with lively yet balanced depictions of birds, beasts, and butterflies. The high-relief technique of this mirror creates a strong three-dimensional effect, showcasing the exquisite bronze casting techniques of the Tang Dynasty. As one of the most representative bronze mirrors of the Tang Dynasty, the Sea Beast and Grape Mirror reflects the cultural exchange between China and the Western Regions. The grape pattern symbolizes prosperity, abundance, and continuity, while the mythical beasts represent protection and auspicious power. This large mirror, with its intricate and exquisite decoration and its simple yet elegant surface, is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese bronze art, suitable for museum exhibitions and private collections.
