Provenance: Private collection, New York, USA; passed down through families. Description: This Jin Dynasty Cizhou ware Yuhuchun vase showcases the unique artistic style of folk ceramics from northern China. Following the classic Yuhuchun shape, the vase has an everted mouth, a slender neck, a rounded and full body, and a slightly everted foot, resulting in an elegant and symmetrical overall form. Made from the characteristic grayish-white clay of Cizhou ware, the glaze employs a unique technique, with a dark brown glaze on the neck and lower part, contrasting sharply with the exposed white body. The decoration employs the signature white-ground black-painting technique of Cizhou ware, directly painted onto the white body with fluid brushstrokes. The body is adorned with lively, scrolling vine patterns, their lines graceful and flowing, full of dynamism and artistic flair. The strong black-and-white contrast showcases the vibrant and dynamic characteristics of Jin Dynasty Northern Kiln ceramics. The lower part is glazed in dark brown, creating an even more striking contrast with the painted upper section. Cizhou ware is renowned for its integration of expressive folk painting traditions into ceramic art, and this Yuhuchun vase is an outstanding representative of the simple yet powerful aesthetics of Jin Dynasty Northern Kiln ceramics.
