Provenance: Private collection in New York, USA, long-term possession of a collector's collection of ancient Chinese jade artifacts. Description: This ancient jade heart-shaped pendant, also known as a "female pendant," is 9.8 cm long, 5 cm wide, and weighs 36 grams. This jade ornament is a high-grade jade artifact from the Han Dynasty, and was once an important part of the personal ornaments of nobles. Its shape originated from the ancient jade bow thumb guard, later evolving into an exquisite decorative pendant. This jade ornament is carved from Hetian white jade, with a natural, warm, and delicate texture. Having withstood the test of centuries, the jade surface displays layers of yellowish-brown and dark gray, seamlessly blending with the jade itself. The surface exhibits a deep and elegant patina, with a soft and restrained luster. The pendant incorporates various exquisite jade carving techniques, including openwork, relief carving, and fine engraving. The entire piece is adorned with classic cloud patterns from the Warring States and Han dynasties. The finely engraved lines are evenly spaced, showcasing superb craftsmanship and a highly polished surface. The lower part is decorated with a shallow relief animal mask pattern, adding to its rustic elegance. The upper part of the pendant features a pair of symmetrical phoenixes, facing each other and sharing a single openwork bead at the top. The phoenixes have curved necks, outstretched wings, and meticulously detailed feathers. Encircling the pendant on both sides are openwork dragons, with finely carved scales, curled whiskers, and flowing tails. The dragons and phoenixes blend seamlessly, creating a balanced composition that combines dynamism and symmetry. The openwork structure is clear and complete, with smooth edges, showcasing the marks of repeated hand-polishing by ancient craftsmen and preserving the original details of the carving technique. Jade pendants were prestigious ornaments associated with aristocratic status during the Han and Wei dynasties. The double phoenixes symbolize harmony and auspiciousness, while the chilong represents authority and nobility. This pendant combines historical significance, exquisite craftsmanship, and outstanding aesthetic value, making it an outstanding representative of ancient Chinese jade carving art.
