Dimensions: 19 cm (7.48 inches) in diameter, 663 g in weight, Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC). Condition and Provenance: This mirror is in excellent condition, with no cracks, defects, or signs of repair. The bronze surface exhibits a naturally formed deep greenish-brown patina, with clearly raised decorations and signs of age and use. Provenance: Private collection, California, USA; acquired from the North American antiques market and held by a private collector for a long period. Description: This bronze mirror is decorated with the classic "Four Mountains" motif, a highly regarded design in the early Chinese bronze mirror tradition. The mirror body is perfectly round with a wide, raised outer edge, creating a balanced overall structure. A square knob platform and a raised, arched hanging ring are located in the center of the back for easy hanging with a rope. The bronze body is solid and uniform, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient Chinese metalwork. The mirror surface is smooth and practical, while the back displays a clever combination of high-relief decoration and finely cast background patterns. Four large "mountain" characters symmetrically surround the mirror surface, forming a powerful cross-shaped pattern. The mountain-shaped mirror, with its sharp angles and strong lines, symbolizes stability, protection, and lasting prosperity. Leaf-shaped patterns adorn the mountain forms, softening the geometric shapes and adding visual balance. The background is covered with intricate floral and cloud-and-thunder patterns, the raised designs contrasting sharply with the recessed textures. Over centuries, the bronze surface has developed a warm, mature patina; the raised areas have faded slightly due to natural wear, while the recessed areas retain their deep hue. The Four Mountains Bronze Mirror is an important category of early Chinese bronze art, symbolizing harmony between heaven and earth and human well-being. This piece, combining historical significance, exquisite casting craftsmanship, and strong decorative appeal, is an ideal choice for scholars, art collectors, and antique art connoisseurs.
