Dimensions: 10.3 cm (4.06 in) in diameter, 3.6 cm (1.42 in) in height, 12th century. Condition and Provenance: This box is in excellent condition, with the lid and body fitting together perfectly. The celadon glaze is well-preserved, and the chrysanthemum and crane motifs are clear and elegant. Slight wear and a small amount of exposed clay are visible around the rim due to age and use. There are no obvious cracks or signs of repair. Provenance: Originally from a private collection in California, USA, now in the collection of a private Asian art institution overseas. Description: This Goryeo celadon round cosmetic box features a chrysanthemum pattern as its base, decorated with a double crane motif. Measuring 10.3 cm in diameter and 3.6 cm in height, it was originally used as a cosmetic container, but later became highly valued by scholars for storing ink or small personal items. The box consists of a perfectly fitting lid and body, with a compact and symmetrical shape and soft, rounded contours. The arched lid is adorned with a circular motif at its center, featuring two graceful cranes painted in black and white, surrounded by delicate cloud patterns. The cranes, in their elegant flight, symbolize longevity, good fortune, and harmony. The central motif is surrounded by raised chrysanthemum petals, the carefully arranged vertical lines creating a three-dimensional floral effect. The entire box is covered in a soft blue-green celadon glaze, its surface lustrous and bearing subtle crackles naturally formed during firing. The exposed clay at the edge of the lid reveals the characteristic reddish-brown body of Goryeo porcelain, while the base retains traces of kiln support.
