Dimensions: 16 cm (6.3 in./0.52 ft) in diameter, 15 cm (5.9 in./0.49 ft) in height, 829 g (1.83 lb), 17th century. Condition and Provenance: This piece is in excellent condition, with the huanghuali wood body intact and no visible seams or repairs. The surface exhibits a naturally formed warm patina with slight signs of use, and the color is antique, consistent with its long period of collection and use. Provenance: Private collection, New York, USA; previously owned by European and American collectors of Chinese antiquities, later acquired by a private art collection. Description: This huanghuali brush pot is carved from a single piece of precious hardwood using the traditional hollow turning technique, presenting a classic cylindrical shape. Measuring 16 cm in diameter, 15 cm in height, and weighing 829 g, it was an important object for holding calligraphy brushes on a scholar's desk. The piece is exquisitely designed, with elegant, rounded, raised rims at both the top and bottom, and a slightly inward-curving middle section, outlining a balanced and beautiful contour. The overall proportions are balanced and stable, reflecting the minimalist aesthetics favored by Ming Dynasty literati. The interior walls are clean and crisp, with uniform thickness and a smooth surface, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The entire piece is crafted from a single piece of huanghuali wood, exhibiting a rich reddish-brown hue and continuous natural grain, resembling winding mountain and water lines. The wood grain extends vertically along the body, layer upon layer, with clearly visible textures, fine knots, and rich layers, showcasing the preciousness and beauty of high-quality huanghuali. The surface is meticulously polished using traditional techniques, presenting a soft luster rather than a glossy lacquer finish. Over the years, the body has naturally developed a deep amber patina, endowing it with a warm and refined character. As an essential item in the traditional scholar's study, this huanghuali brush pot embodies the Ming Dynasty literati's pursuit of simplicity, natural beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship. Its one-piece shape, elegant lines, beautiful grain, and rich patina make it an outstanding representative of classical Chinese wood carving.
