Dimensions: 19 cm wide, 18.5 cm high (approx. 7.5 × 7.3 inches), 10th-12th century. Condition and Provenance: Overall well-preserved, body intact. The black clay surface is stable, retaining traces of gilded bronze inlay, natural green patina, and the sedimentation of time. This piece came from a private collection in California, USA, and is now in the collection of the North American Private Asian Art Collection. Description: This rare black flat pottery piece, decorated with gilded bronze inlay, raised rivets, and floral metalwork, showcases a unique ancient folk ceramic tradition, perfectly blending pottery craftsmanship with metal decoration. The body, crafted using a combination of wheel throwing and molding techniques, is a horizontally flat, hexagonal drum shape with a rounded, stable base. The upper opening is square with thickened edges, and both sides feature large, openwork ring handles for easy carrying. The body is divided into multiple vertical planes with strong geometric transitions, creating a powerful sculptural effect. The surface is decorated with various bronze elements, including raised gilded bronze studs throughout the body and four-petaled floral patterns inlaid on the handle. Some areas still retain traces of the original gilding, while other bronze parts exhibit a green and reddish-brown patina that has naturally formed over hundreds of years. The ceramic surface is a matte blackish-gray, showing traces of traditional forming techniques, such as wheel marks on the rim, inner wall, and base. Natural aging, soil deposition, and surface wear endow it with a rustic and elegant quality and a rich historical feel. This piece, which integrates ceramic making, bronze casting, gilding, and inlay techniques, is an outstanding representative of ancient decorative arts and possesses significant cultural and collectible value.
