Dimensions: Height 26 cm, hand width 9 cm, weight 2967 g (approx. 6.5 lbs), approx. 10.2 x 3.5 inches, 7th-10th century. Condition and Provenance: Overall in good condition, the sculpture is well-preserved. The stone is stable, with numerous traces of original gilding on the gemstone and natural signs of aging on the surface. This piece originated from a private collection in California, USA, and is now housed in the North American Buddhist Art Collection. Description: This carved green stone Buddha hand, holding a precious gemstone, is a rare surviving fragment from the ancient Buddhist sculptural tradition. The hand is 26 cm high, 9 cm wide, and weighs 2967 g. It is finely carved with realistic anatomical details and exhibits distinct Buddhist sculptural characteristics. This hand is a separate sculptural fragment; the wrist is cylindrical, and it was originally part of a larger Buddha statue. The statue is gracefully posed, following classic Buddhist hand gestures, with the thumb and forefinger gently supporting a round wish-fulfilling jewel, while the other fingers extend naturally upwards. The fingers, palm lines, and subtle anatomical details are meticulously depicted with soft, elegant lines, conveying compassion and tranquility. A thick, round bracelet is carved at the wrist, adding a touch of dignified elegance. The sculpture is crafted from high-quality green stone using a full-round carving technique. Much of the original gilding is preserved on the jewel, its golden surface contrasting sharply with the grey-green stone. Centuries of natural weathering have resulted in a patina, soil deposits, and weathering textures on the stone's surface. Buddhist hand gestures symbolize generosity, fulfillment, blessings, and the fulfillment of wishes. This fragment of sculpture, with its magnificent scale, exquisite carving technique, and well-preserved gilding details, is an important example of ancient Buddhist stone carving and still possesses extremely high value for collection, research, and display.
