Provenance: Private collection, California, USA. Description: This exquisite Qing dynasty zitan wood carved plate features a ten-petal chrysanthemum design and comes with its original zitan wood base. The shallow, flowing lines of the plate, along with the screen-like base carved with openwork scrolling foliage and dragon motifs, allow the plate to stand upright, making it a complete scholar's decorative piece. The center of the plate is carved with a raised "福" (Fu, meaning good fortune) character against a background of continuous wan (万) patterns. The interior is intricately decorated with layered auspicious patterns, including seasonal flowers, coins, books, and ruyi (如意, a type of scepter symbolizing good fortune, wealth, and elegance. The deep relief carving is exquisite, creating a powerful three-dimensional effect. The rim is petal-shaped, each petal inlaid with a framed image of auspicious dragons and cranes. The dragons are powerful and graceful, soaring through the clouds; the cranes symbolize longevity and harmony. The surrounding cloud patterns create a balanced composition, rich in detail, and elegant. The entire surface is decorated with intricately carved patterns, further enhancing the depth and three-dimensionality of the relief. Both the plate and the base are carved from large pieces of natural rosewood. Beneath the deep brown-black marks of time, the unique dense grain and "hair-like" texture of rosewood are visible. Over time, the surface has developed a warm and rich luster, preserving the natural beauty of the rosewood. This piece retains its original, complete base, exquisite carving, auspicious symbolism, and superb craftsmanship, representing the refined taste of Qing Dynasty decorative art.
