Dimensions: 21 cm (8.27 inches) high, 19 cm (7.48 inches) long and wide, weighing 2000 grams. Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Condition and Provenance: This box is crafted entirely from solid huanghuali wood, with clearly visible, naturally flowing grain patterns. The surface is smooth and even, exhibiting a natural patina accumulated over centuries, without modern staining or chemical aging treatments. The box uses traditional mortise and tenon joints, fitting perfectly and securely without cracks or looseness. The vertical supports of the handles are decorated with intricate, openwork geometric carvings in the Hui style, with distinct layers. All carved lines are complete and intact, without chipping or breakage. The two internal storage trays, lid, base, and original metal locking rod are all original factory parts, without any replacement wood or repairs. The edges of the box show only slight wear, normal signs of use, without insect infestation, rot, severe dents, or large missing areas. This portable box was a daily storage and travel utensil used by southern literati during the Qing Dynasty and was exported overseas in the 1980s. Currently held by a private collector in New York State specializing in Chinese antique hardwood items. New York State and Vancouver are major global trading centers for Chinese antique hardwood items. Description: This double-layered huanghuali wood trunk, decorated with openwork patterns, is a classic practical hardwood trunk from the Qing Dynasty. It was used to store seals, inkstones, antiques, and other items on a scholar's desk, and could also serve as a portable food box for travel, combining practicality with traditional Chinese woodcarving aesthetics. The entire piece consists of four complete parts: a base, two square storage trays, a lid, and an openwork carved handle. All parts are well-preserved and complete. The trunk is square and upright, with smooth, rounded edges, employing precise and even mortise and tenon joints, showcasing top-level traditional woodworking skills. The top handle features an ergonomic, gently curved design, while the side pillars are carved with classic Hui-style geometric patterns. The openwork carving creates a balanced negative space, with simple, symmetrical lines that combine decorative and structural support. Two deep inner trays offer ample storage space, their unadorned interior showcasing the natural beauty of the huanghuali wood's grain. Original metal locking levers securely fasten the lid, ensuring the safety and privacy of your belongings. Huanghuali wood is extremely rare today; this box, crafted from thick solid wood, boasts beautiful grain, an even patina, and all components are original, untouched by restoration, and in excellent condition. Complete double-layered huanghuali boxes are already rare on the antique market, and those in such excellent condition with original locks are even more exceptional. This box is ideal for display in a scholar's study at an antique furniture museum and is a prized possession in overseas collections of Chinese hardwood goods.
