Dimensions: Frame length 64 cm (25.20 inches), frame width 42 cm (16.54 inches). 20th-century modern work. Condition and Provenance: The paper painting is intact and undamaged, free from insect damage, mold, tears, or water stains; the ink and mineral pigments are vibrant and new, showing no fading or peeling. The vertical calligraphy on the left is clear, and several red carved seals are clearly legible. The original solid wood frame with rounded corners and silk padding are clean and flat, with scratch-free protective glass. This painting was passed down through a Chinese art collector before being transported to North America and is now part of a private modern Chinese painting collection in Ohio. New York and California are major global trading centers for modern Chinese scroll paintings. Description: This modern freestyle Chinese painting depicts a mother and child riding a water buffalo, blending traditional ink techniques with soft, light-colored mineral pigments. The composition is layered, achieving a delicate balance between the subject and the negative space. The lower half of the painting depicts the head of a water buffalo, rendered with varying shades of ink wash, the sharp, powerful lines outlining the curved horns. The simple yet vivid brushstrokes capture the buffalo's gentle nature. The upper half depicts a rural woman and her young child sitting side-by-side on the buffalo's back. The woman wears a yellow straw hat and a simple linen dress, a scarlet belt around her waist, and tightly embraces her child. Soft, flowing lines outline the figure, while subtle ochre and pale yellow hues create shadows on the clothing, evoking a rustic rural atmosphere. A line of flowing, powerful cursive script runs along the left edge of the painting, complementing three vermilion carved seals and blending perfectly into the composition. The background is rendered with a very light blue wash to represent the river, with ample white space creating a tranquil, distant waterside atmosphere. In classical Chinese art, the water buffalo symbolizes harvest and family prosperity, while the mother and child image adds a warm and auspicious meaning. This work blends classical literati ink painting techniques with realistic rural folk aesthetics, retaining its original, intact frame without any repainting or restoration. It is a highly collectible modern Chinese figure and animal painting, perfectly suited for traditional Chinese interior decoration and professional art exhibitions.
