Dimensions: Height 22.3 cm (8.78 in). Width 17.7 cm (6.97 in.), 3300-2300 BC. Condition and Provenance: This artifact is generally in good condition. The blade shows slight ancient chipping. The upper bottom retains its original polishing marks. The central double-conical drill hole is clean and well-shaped, with ancient rotary wear visible on the inner walls. The surface is covered with natural mineral spots, a white patina formed during burial, and a golden-brown crust. All variations are genuine burial patina. This artifact has not undergone modern polishing, artificial staining, or imitation patina, preserving its original ancient surface condition. This Liangzhu stone chisel comes from a private collection in New York City, New York, USA. It was brought to North America in the 1980s and was once owned by a significant private collector of Chinese prehistoric artifacts. This Liangzhu stone chisel has been kept in a humidity-controlled cabinet for decades and has never been auctioned or publicly exhibited. Description: This Liangzhu culture stone axe is flat and trapezoidal, carved from dark metamorphic rock. The surface is smoothly polished, narrower at the tail and gradually widening towards the curved blade. A double-conical hole is drilled in the center for attaching it to a wooden handle. Evolved from practical stone axes, the stone axe served primarily as a ceremonial tool symbolizing status in Liangzhu society, rather than a common work tool. Its mottled golden-brown and white patina is the result of thousands of years of burial underground. Its symmetrical shape and exquisite polishing technique faithfully preserve the characteristics of Neolithic Liangzhu stone tool processing. It is an important material reference for the study of the ritual culture of the Yangtze River Delta, possessing extremely high prehistoric archaeological and collectible value.
