Dimensions: 40 cm (15.75 inches) in total height, a detachable cast iron courtyard lantern from the late 19th century. Condition and Provenance: This lantern consists of two detachable parts: a pavilion-style lampshade and a high-legged base. It was cast using the lost-wax method and is made entirely of solid cast iron. The lampshade retains complete natural rust with even weathering, showing no signs of modern painting or artificial aging. The four sides of the lampshade feature neat and evenly spaced diamond-shaped openwork patterns; the decorative reliefs, including cloud patterns on the eaves, a gourd-shaped top ornament, and lotus and scroll patterns on the base, are clear and complete, without obvious damage, missing parts, or repairs. The four cloud-shaped legs at the base are well-preserved, and the base plate shows only slight natural weathering, without perforations, cracks, or weld repairs. The mortise and tenon joints are tight, and the structure is sturdy. This antique lantern was originally provided by an Asian antiques gallery in Vancouver and acquired in 2026 by a private collector in Pennsylvania specializing in Chinese garden ornaments. New York, Vancouver, and Toronto are leading global centers for the trading of antique ironware. Description: This late Qing Dynasty cast iron pavilion-style lantern is a practical decorative piece designed for traditional Chinese classical gardens. It features a two-piece, detachable structure for easy disassembly and transport. The lantern's top is a gourd-shaped ornament supported by two upward-curving lotus petals, topped with a hipped roof adorned with cloud-shaped corner braces. The evenly distributed serrated tiles on the eaves perfectly reproduce the architectural aesthetics of ancient Chinese pavilions and towers. The cylindrical lampshade is decorated with diamond-shaped openwork patterns on all four sides, creating a balanced layout that produces soft, diffused light while showcasing exquisite decorative details; layered raised lines outline a distinct structural contour. The central circular base is decorated with full, three-dimensional scroll lotus patterns, transitioning to a double-layered, raised column that connects to a four-legged cloud-shaped base. The outer edge of the base is decorated with wavy floral patterns, and the four outward-curving feet provide stable support. The flat bottom is free of any inscriptions. This piece, crafted from heavy cast iron using sophisticated traditional casting techniques, perfectly blends ancient architectural style, exquisite openwork iron carving, and practical lighting design. Having been displayed outdoors for centuries, it retains its natural patina, exuding an elegant and rustic charm. This piece possesses multiple values in decorating Chinese tea rooms, classical gardens, and Zen-inspired interior spaces, and is also an ideal choice for studying ancient Chinese cast iron craftsmanship and traditional garden furnishings. It enjoys widespread demand in the North American Asian antiques market and has long-term, stable appreciation potential.
