Dimensions: 17 cm (6.69 in) in diameter, 7.5 cm (2.76 in) in height, a large Jun ware bowl from the 12th to 14th centuries (Jin-Yuan period). Condition and Provenance: This bowl exhibits typical Jun ware form, with an everted rim and a deep, rounded body. The rim is slightly brownish due to the thinning of the glaze during firing. Both the interior and exterior are covered with a thick, even milky-white to sky-blue glaze, finely textured and with a soft sheen. The unglazed foot rim exposes the rough, earthen body; the base shows ancient ink marks, kiln rust, and layers of buried soil. The glaze is intact, without any minor cracks, chips, or signs of repair, nor any later glazing. The rim shows only slight wear, due to ancient use. The original glaze from its excavation is completely preserved, without modern cleaning or polishing. This Jun ware bowl was initially sold by an antique gallery in Hong Kong and entered the private collection of a pre-Ming dynasty ceramicist in California in 2026. Hong Kong, California, and New York are important global trading centers for Song and Yuan dynasty Chinese ceramics. Description: This large Jun ware bowl, with its sky-blue glaze, is a typical example of utilitarian display ceramics from the Northern Jun ware tradition. Jun ware ceramics flourished in Northern China during the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, renowned for its unique milky-white glaze. The bowl features a wide, flared opening, a full, rounded body, and a low, wide foot, reflecting the popular large bowl shape of the Jin and Yuan periods. The body is covered with a typical thick, milky-white sky-blue glaze. The glaze flows naturally, gradually thinning at the rim to create a warm, brownish-red edge. Fine, natural crackles are present both inside and outside the bowl, a characteristic feature of ceramics from this period, resulting from the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the glaze and the body. The exposed foot reveals the coarse earthenware body with a natural rust-like patina from firing; the old handwritten ink marks in the center of the foot are a remnant of an ancient workshop or early collector. While Jun ware is known for its striking purplish-red markings, the understated sky-blue glaze is equally important, showcasing a tranquil and rustic style. Large Jun ware bowls are extremely difficult to fire; large-diameter pieces often warp or crack during firing, making well-preserved surviving examples extremely rare. This bowl retains its original state as when it was unearthed, without any modern cleaning or coloring. The glaze texture, crackle pattern, and ink marks on the foot rim perfectly match the characteristics of Jin and Yuan dynasty Jun ware porcelain. It is both an eye-catching tabletop ornament and an important specimen for ceramic research. Highly sought after by international collectors of Ming dynasty ceramics, it possesses extremely high aesthetic value and reliable long-term collectible value.
