Condition and Provenance: This pottery head is largely intact, with both ears and all facial features clearly visible. Thousands of years of burial have created a thick layer of ancient soil on its surface. Natural surface erosion and small burial pits are present, along with fine, ancient cracks. It has not undergone any modern restoration, nor has any artificial burial crust been found; the original sandy clay body is perfectly preserved. This piece comes from a historic private collection of prehistoric art in Buffalo, New York, USA. The artifact was introduced to North America in the 1990s by a major European antique dealer and has since been housed in the collector's collection of Neolithic East Asian artifacts. Description: This large pottery head sculpture is a rare surviving piece from the Hongshan Culture of northern China during the Neolithic period. It was entirely hand-molded, without the use of wheel-throwing techniques, and is made of coarse, sandy pottery. The head has a full, rounded outline, with broad, perforated ears. The eyes are depicted with shallowly carved outlines and protruding pupils, creating a solemn and ethereal expression. The broad nose has open nostrils, while the mouth is an openwork design. The facial features are simple and abstract, abandoning elaborate decorations and conveying a strong sense of mysterious, primitive art. Burial and weathering have covered the entire artifact, revealing clearly visible mineral particles in the clay matrix. This type of large anthropomorphic pottery head is closely related to the ancient sacrificial rituals and spiritual worship of the Hongshan society. Extant artifacts of this type are extremely rare. They are invaluable material evidence of early northern Chinese primitive religion, prehistoric sculpture, and the spiritual culture of the Hongshan people, possessing extremely high archaeological and collectible value.
