Dimensions: 20.5 cm (8.07 inches) in diameter, 8.5 cm (3.35 inches) in height. Ancient Song Dynasty white porcelain. Condition and Provenance: Covered entirely in a soft, milky-white glaze, the surface is even and smooth. The five floral notches along the rim are intact and undamaged. Fine natural wheel-throwing spirals are visible on the exterior, without any through cracks, dents, or signs of repair. The foot rim is unglazed, with naturally formed brown burial marks on the surface. Only a very fine natural shrinkage line is visible at the center of the base, not due to burial damage. Overall, the piece is in excellent condition, without any modern chemical cleaning or polishing. This artifact was unearthed decades ago near the Ding kiln site in Quyang, Hebei Province, and was acquired in 2019 by a private collector of Song Dynasty porcelain in Seattle, Washington, USA. Hong Kong remains a major global trading center for Song Dynasty and antique Song Dynasty ceramics. Description: This Song Dynasty Ding ware white-glazed conical bowl with floral rim is a classic example of practical and decorative ceramics from the Northern white porcelain tradition, fully embodying the mature Ding ware craftsmanship and the simple yet elegant aesthetic style of the Song Dynasty. It features the iconic conical shape: a wide rim, steep walls that taper downwards to a narrow foot, creating a smooth silhouette. The shallow, wide body was suitable for daily use in the Song Dynasty, such as for drinking tea, holding food, or placing on a table. The rim is shaped like a delicate five-petaled flower, a refined decorative technique popular in Song Dynasty folk kilns, avoiding the monotony of ordinary round bowls. The entire piece is covered in the characteristic ivory-white glaze of Ding ware, with a uniform layer and a soft, restrained luster, devoid of any harsh artificial shine. The porcelain body is dense and fine-grained, pale white, with soft, spiraling wheel-throwing patterns visible on the outer wall, clearly demonstrating the ancient wheel-throwing technique. The unglazed foot rim reveals the dense, thick clay beneath, covered with rust accumulated over the years, giving it an antique feel. The fine lines at the center of the base are natural shrinkage marks from the high-temperature firing process, not damage from excavation. As one of the five major imperial kilns of the Song Dynasty, Ding ware white porcelain was widely circulated in ancient times, but well-preserved, brightly glazed conical bowls are extremely rare on the market today. This piece has a classic shape and an unpolished glaze, showcasing both the everyday life of Song Dynasty folk ceramics and the unique tranquility and elegance of Song Dynasty porcelain. It is an important artifact for studying the firing techniques of the Northern Song Dynasty and ancient Chinese tea ceremony and dietary customs, and has long attracted the keen interest of ancient porcelain collectors worldwide and North American Asian art museums, possessing extremely high collection and archaeological research value.
