Dimensions: 12 cm (4.72 inches) in diameter, 4.8 cm (1.89 inches) in height, 12th-13th century Southern Song Dynasty, Longquan official style celadon scholar's brush washer. Condition and Provenance: This brush washer is in perfect condition, without cracks, defects, or signs of repair. Both the interior and exterior are covered with a thick, pale blue celadon glaze, naturally forming crackles of varying depths. The glaze is thinner at the rim, revealing a faint brown body, while the exposed foot rim displays the characteristic iron-brown color of the firing process. The glaze exhibits a rustic and soft patina, without any signs of artificial dyeing or modern polishing. This Southern Song Dynasty Longquan official style brush washer was acquired in 2021 by a private Song Dynasty ceramics collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Hong Kong is a major global trading center for Chinese ceramics from the Song and pre-Song periods. Description: This museum-quality Longquan celadon brush washer is an exquisite scholar's utensil from the Southern Song Dynasty, made in the Longquan kilns, imitating the style of official kilns, and used by ancient scholars for washing brushes in their studies. Its distinctive features include a wide, flared rim, a straight and upright body that gradually narrows to a large foot rim. The body's outline is dignified and symmetrical, with simple and flowing lines, perfectly embodying the understated elegance favored in the Song Dynasty. Both the interior and exterior are covered with a thick, even, pale blue glaze, the color as rich as jade, with a soft and natural luster. The body, interior, exterior, and base are covered with crisscrossing crackles of varying sizes, formed gradually over hundreds of years of firing, unaffected by modern dyeing. Where the glaze thins at the rim, the brown body is faintly visible; the unglazed foot rim displays a rust-like color, echoing the famous "purple mouth and iron foot" style of the Southern Song official kilns. Under the influence of the Southern Song court, the production of imitations of Longquan official kiln porcelain was relatively short-lived, resulting in a scarcity of surviving examples. Well-preserved brush washers of this type are particularly rare. This brush washer is symmetrical in shape, with a full glaze, realistic crackle patterns, and a foot rim and shape that conform to textbook standards; its condition is excellent. It is a high-quality celadon scholar's ware from the Southern Song Dynasty, and it has important historical and academic reference value for studying the imitation techniques of Longquan official kilns and the culture of scholar's deskware in the Song Dynasty.
