Dimensions: Stem cup: 8.5 cm (3.35 in) diameter, 8.5 cm (3.35 in) height; Deep-bodied cup: 8.5 cm (3.35 in) diameter, 6 cm (2.36 in) height; Straight-walled cup: 8 cm (3.15 in) diameter, 5 cm (1.97 in) height. A set of celadon-glazed drinking vessels from a Southern folk kiln during the Song-Yuan period (10th-14th centuries). Condition and Provenance: All three pieces are in their original excavated condition, intact, with no obvious cracks, severe damage, or signs of repair. The stem cup and deep-bodied cup have fine, natural crackles, and the glaze is well-preserved. The straight-walled cup has a soft, glossy glaze with slight soil wear. The exposed foot rim shows natural soil patina and remnants of ancient kiln sand. The glaze of this porcelain set is soft, a pale grayish-white, with the characteristic blue-and-white glaze of celadon, and has not been modernly reglazed or chemically cleaned. This set of porcelain was acquired in 2020 by a private collector in Seattle, Washington, USA, specializing in ancient Chinese porcelain. Hong Kong is a major global trading center for Song and pre-Song dynasty Chinese ceramics. Description: This set of porcelain, of significant museum value, comprises three distinct Song-Yuan dynasty celadon drinking vessels: a stemmed cup, a deep-bodied cup, and a straight-walled cup. Well-preserved Song-Yuan dynasty household porcelain is extremely rare on the antique market today. The stemmed cup, with its flared rim, deep, rounded body, and tall, flared stem, was a very popular drinking vessel during the Song-Yuan period, easy to hold and suitable for formal banquets. The deep-bodied cup has a slightly constricted rim, full, rounded walls, a short foot, and a generous capacity, suitable for drinking wine. The straight-walled cup has a slightly inward-curving rim, a simple cylindrical body, and a shallow foot, representing a simple and practical folk tableware. Each piece is covered inside and out with a soft celadon glaze, a pale grayish-green color, and a thin, semi-transparent glaze layer. Both the stemmed and deep-bellied cups exhibit fine, natural crackle patterns, formed by centuries of temperature and humidity changes underground, and not by human intervention. The unglazed foot rims reveal grayish-brown, porous local clay, covered with traces of excavated soil and kiln sand remnants—typical characteristics of porcelain produced in southern folk kilns during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Song and Yuan dynasty celadon porcelain inherited the porcelain-making techniques of the Tang and Five Dynasties periods, representing an important folk branch of the celadon tradition. Local kilns mass-produced cups, bowls, and dishes to meet daily needs. This well-preserved set of three differently shaped vessels provides authentic material evidence for understanding the folk drinking culture, tableware customs, and firing techniques of southern kilns during the Song and Yuan dynasties. All the artifacts retain their original state from their excavation, untouched by modern large-scale alterations. It not only provides reliable material evidence for academic research but also possesses extremely high collection value.
