Dimensions: Mouth diameter 4.5 cm (1.77 inches), overall height 12.5 cm (4.92 inches). This is a 12th-13th century Southern Song Dynasty Longquan ware jade cong-shaped scholar's vase. Condition and Provenance: This vase is well-proportioned, perfectly preserved, without cracks, defects, or signs of repair. The original thick, light celadon glaze is intact, with natural crazing and clear Bagua (Eight Trigrams) patterns on all four sides. The distinctive iron-brown foot rim has a natural patina from age, the glaze is glossy without peeling or flaking, and there is no modern artificial dyeing; all kiln firing characteristics are preserved. This vase was acquired in 2018 from a private collector's collection of ancient Chinese ceramics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Hong Kong was a major global trading center for Chinese ceramics during the Song and pre-Song periods. Description: This exquisite museum-quality gui-shaped vase is a representative work of Southern Song Dynasty Longquan celadon porcelain. Modeled after ancient jade gui ritual vessels, it was highly valued by Song Dynasty literati and was an ideal choice for display in their studies. The vase features a classic square exterior and round interior shape, slender and elegant, with a short neck. The square body is decorated with vertically raised Bagua (Eight Trigrams) patterns, imitating the carving techniques of ancient jade gui. The base is a delicate circular foot. The square exterior and hollow interior symbolize the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of "round heaven and square earth." The entire piece is covered with a thick, soft, and evenly colored pale celadon glaze, as translucent as jade. The golden crackles on the glaze are a natural interweaving formed by years of heat rather than artificial kiln firing. The Bagua patterns are clear and striking, and the glaze thins slightly at the corners, creating a natural raised effect with a strong three-dimensional feel. This flute's foot is meticulously finished, with the exposed clay edge exhibiting the distinctive iron-brown foot rim characteristic of Longquan ware. The body is firm and hard, and the glaze blends seamlessly with the body, showing no signs of later alteration or embellishment. The flute shape originates from Shangzhou jade artifacts. Influenced by the antiquarian trend of the Song Dynasty, Longquan kilns produced a large quantity of flute-shaped porcelain for use in study decoration and flower arrangements, reflecting the Song Dynasty literati's admiration for ancient etiquette and culture. This small and exquisite flute-shaped porcelain piece is suitable for desktop appreciation. Well-preserved small-sized flute-shaped porcelain from the Southern Song Dynasty Longquan kiln is relatively rare in the global antique market. The glaze color, crackle pattern, shape, and iron foot of this flute-shaped porcelain are all textbook examples, making it an important material reference for studying the antiquarian porcelain techniques of the Southern Song Dynasty Longquan kiln, the evolution of ritual porcelain, and celadon firing techniques. It not only embodies profound ancient etiquette and cultural connotations but also possesses outstanding aesthetic value for Song Dynasty celadon, making it an ideal choice for collection and interior decoration.
