Dimensions: 15.5 cm (6.10 in) in diameter, 9 cm (3.54 in) in height. A 12th-13th century Southern Song Dynasty official kiln bronze-style ritual incense burner. Condition and Provenance: The incense burner is in excellent condition, without cracks, damage, or signs of glaze repair or embellishment. The original celadon glaze is well-preserved, with natural crackle patterns both inside and out. Three raised ribs are clearly defined. The tips of the three legs reveal iron-rich natural clay with a patina developed over time; the glaze is tightly bonded to the body. There is no modern dyeing or artificial aging; all kiln firing marks and chronological characteristics are fully preserved. This piece was acquired in 2021 by a private collector of ancient Chinese ceramics in Los Angeles, California, USA. Hong Kong was a major global trading center for Song and pre-Song ceramics. Description: This museum-quality tripod incense burner is a representative work of the Southern Song Dynasty official kiln, imitating bronze ritual vessels from the Shangzhou region, used for incense burning in the imperial court and the bedrooms of scholars. It features an everted rim, a short, tapering neck, and a full, rounded body, adorned with three prominent vertical ribs extending downwards to three sturdy tripods. The overall design is dignified and elegant, exuding a rich antique charm. Both the interior and exterior are covered with a thick, soft, sky-blue glaze, the color even and as translucent as jade. Fine, interwoven natural crackles are distributed along the contours of the body and the ribs; these are formed by the difference in thermal stress between the glaze and the clay over many years, rather than by artificial kiln firing. The glaze thins slightly at the three prominent ribs, deepening the crackles and creating a striking gold-line decorative effect. Each foot has been trimmed, revealing the unglazed bottom, showcasing the deep purplish-black iron-like body characteristic of Southern Song official kilns. This thick body is a typical feature of authentic Southern Song official kiln porcelain. During the Song Dynasty, there was a strong trend of imitating antiquity, and official kilns produced a large number of porcelain ritual vessels imitating ancient bronzes for use in royal sacrifices, Buddhist worship, and incense burners in scholars' studies. The Li-style tripod incense burner is one of the most representative forms of Song Dynasty celadon, and those produced by the official kilns are extremely rare on the antique market. This large incense burner, with its well-proportioned shape, soft and elegant glaze, clearly visible natural crackle patterns, and distinctive features such as ribs and iron feet, is a valuable material reference for studying the kiln-making techniques of the Southern Song Dynasty official kilns, the ancient ritual system of the Song Dynasty, and the formula of celadon glazes. This incense burner not only possesses extremely high aesthetic value for Song Dynasty celadon but also embodies profound ritual and cultural significance, making it an ideal choice for collection and interior decoration.
