Dimensions: Mouth diameter 14 cm (5.51 inches), total height 13.7 cm (5.39 inches), 12th-14th century Jin-Yuan dynasty Junyao scholar incense burner. Condition and Provenance: The incense burner is structurally intact and without cracks. Minor signs of aging are present on the raised surfaces. Natural purple spots are present at the firing transition. Both the interior and exterior glazes exhibit naturally formed crackles. The three animal-shaped feet are exposed from the soil, with naturally formed clay crusts on their surfaces. The base shows original manufacturing marks, with no signs of modern polishing, repair, or artificial glazing. This incense burner was originally owned by a private European collector and is now in the possession of a private antique ceramics collection in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Hong Kong is a major global trading market for pre-Jin-Yuan dynasty Chinese ceramics. Description: This Junyao tripod incense burner is an exquisite incense burner used by scholars during the Jin-Yuan period. This incense burner vividly demonstrates the magical charm of color changes during the Jun ware firing process and is considered a representative work of medieval northern ceramic incense burners. It features a thick, drum-shaped cylinder with a wide, flared rim, supported by three robust animal-shaped feet. The outer wall is decorated with two raised horizontal bowstring lines. A ring of rounded, spherical protrusions encircles the body, interspersed with three-dimensional floral reliefs, the petals clearly layered and highly sculptural. The outer wall is glazed in classic Jun ware's milky blue glaze, accented with striking rose-purple kiln splashes. The purple, blue, and gray colors blend and flow seamlessly, showcasing the unpredictable beauty of Jun ware's firing process. The interior is entirely covered with a soft, even milky blue glaze, a thick layer of glaze covered with delicate natural crackle patterns. The bottom of the three feet exposes the rough, original clay body, which has developed a patina due to long-term exposure to the soil. During the Jin and Yuan dynasties, Jun ware produced a large number of incense burners for studies and palaces. Purple-spotted patterns were a highly sought-after decorative feature at the time. Today, three-legged incense burners combining rivet decorations and floral reliefs are relatively rare on the market. This incense burner features a rugged and simple shape, rich and varied glaze colors, and natural and distinct kiln-transformation marks, exhibiting clear characteristics of its era. It is not only an important reference artifact for studying the firing techniques of the Jin and Yuan dynasties' Jun ware, but also a visually striking antique incense burner, possessing significant archaeological, aesthetic, and collectible value.
