Dimensions: Height 0.968 ft (29.5 cm) Condition and Provenance: This vase is in excellent condition, without any through-cracks or fine lines. Minor wear on the rim is due to handling over several generations. The glaze is scattered with natural aging spots, and small original glaze pores remain where cobalt glaze has accumulated. There are no signs of damage, breakage, repair, repainting, or over-painting. The exposed foot rim shows dried, aged clay mixed with kiln sand and clay crust, and slight flaking of the ancient glaze on the base is in its original state. This vase comes from the private collection of Ms. E.F. of New York City, New York, USA. This collector has dedicated decades to collecting East Asian ceramics. This vase was purchased in 1988 from a renowned Asian art and antique dealer in Manhattan and has since been passed down through the family and stored in a professionally controlled temperature and humidity private vault. It has never been consigned for auction or has any museum exhibition record. Description: This is a fine Yuan Dynasty Jingdezhen blue and white Yuhuchun vase. This vessel has a trumpet-shaped mouth with scrolling foliage along the inner rim; its slender neck is decorated with layered phoenix leaf patterns, meander patterns, and ruyi cloud patterns. The full, pear-shaped body features four large begonia-shaped decorations on each side, depicting turbulent waves interspersed with mythical beast motifs. The outer edges of these decorations are adorned with vibrant scrolling foliage, the leaves rendered with free and unrestrained brushstrokes. The lower part of the body is decorated with rhomboid patterns, above which are individual lotus petal designs, each containing ruyi cloud patterns. The foot rim flares outwards, finished using traditional Yuan dynasty hand-crafting techniques, and has a coarse, sandy texture. The underglaze cobalt blue glaze exhibits a rich, deep blue-black tone, and natural rust spots are visible on the thick layer of pigment beneath the soft bluish-white glaze. The multi-layered decorations are balanced and harmonious, with free and unrestrained brushstrokes, making it a model of extant Yuan dynasty blue-and-white porcelain.
