Provenance: Private collection, Hong Kong, China. Acquired from a vintage Chinese porcelain dealer in Hong Kong in 1997 and kept within private family storage ever since.Description:This deep‑bodied oil‑spot tea bowl was fired at the Jian kilns of Song China, a precious vessel from the age of competitive tea tasting. It adopts the classic deep‑form shou‑kou shape with slightly contracted rim, full deep tapering body and short solid foot ring. This shape sits securely in hand and works perfectly for Song‑style tea competition. Thick jet‑black glaze fully covers both interior and exterior. Countless silvery‑grey and bluish‑black oil‑spot crystals scatter all across the dark glaze ground, varying in dimension. Crystals gather densely around bowl center beneath soft subdued luster. The exterior is equally covered with oil‑spot speckles, glaze flows naturally with subtle drip bulges from firing. The foot exposes the famous dark iron‑rich Jian‑yao clay body, coarse, dense and heavy, trimmed in a simple, unrefined kiln‑work fashion with natural kiln residue. Tea‑competition culture was hugely popular across Song China. Oil‑spot Jian bowls were highly prized, yet this special crystalline glaze was extremely difficult to achieve with low success firing rate. This example boasts abundant well‑distributed crystals, deep antique glaze tone and well‑preserved original condition. It superbly demonstrates the high‑level firing skill of Jian potters. This authentic Song Jian tea bowl is a desirable collectible, carrying meaningful research value for tea culture and ancient ceramic technology.
