Dimensions:Height 14.5cm (5.71 in), Mouth Diameter 7.5cm (2.95 in), 10th‑13th Century A.D.Condition & Provenance:The vase is fully intact, free of cracks, chips or later restoration. Interwoven natural crackles run all over the sky‑blue glaze with varied depth of fissures. The foot rim shows characteristic dark iron‑colored body under smooth aged patina. Crackles on body and tubular handles flow naturally, interior and exterior glaze tone are perfectly matched. Provenance: Private collection, Miami, Florida, USA. Acquired from a European antique dealer in 1997, kept in private hands for decades and seldom exhibited publicly.Description:This octagonal guan‑yao celadon vase with tubular ears was produced at the imperial Guan kilns of Song China, a refined scholar‑studio display piece archaizing ancient bronze ritual vessels. Every section including mouth, neck, belly and foot follows octagonal geometry. Tall neck is flanked by symmetrical hollow tubular handles, segmented by raised horizontal bow‑string mouldings. The belly gently swells downward, supported by an octagonal foot ring. The whole silhouette is solemn and dignified with crisp contours, derived from ancient bronze hu vessel prototypes. Thick velvety sky‑blue celadon glaze covers the entire piece with jade‑like even texture. Dense interlaced natural crackles permeate the glaze, the signature decorative hallmark of Guan ware. Glaze slightly thins at rim hinting underlying body tone, while exposed foot rim presents deep dark brown‑black clay, representing the famous “purple mouth and iron foot” feature. The inner cavity is also fully glazed with matching celadon and consistent crackles echoing exterior. As an imperial‑commissioned kiln, Guan kiln output was extremely limited. Octagonal guan‑er vases rank among high‑grade Song archaizing display porcelains, complete surviving examples are quite rare today. This octagonal vase possesses well‑proportioned shape, serene elegant glaze and time‑honored crackle pattern. It perfectly embodies the subtle restrained aesthetic ideal of Song imperial ceramics. Serving as important physical evidence for researching Song court porcelain craft and archaic ritual custom, it carries outstanding artistic and collectible value.
