Dimensions:Mouth Diameter 18.5cm (7.28 in), Height 6.8cm (2.68 in), 10th-13th Century A.D.Condition & Provenance:The bowl is fully intact with no cracks, chips or restorations. Smooth rich purple-brown glaze bears natural iron speckles across the whole surface. Thin off-white unglazed rim is consistent with Ding kiln upside-down firing technique. Unglazed foot reveals firm clean white clay with original aged patina fully preserved. Provenance: Long-term private collection, Hong Kong, China. Purchased at Toronto Asian Art Fair in 2001, kept within one family collection for over forty years. Only exhibited in small group shows focused on Song monochrome ceramics, never consigned to auction.Description:This large conical tea bowl was manufactured at Ding kilns during the Song Dynasty, a iconic monochrome ceramic vessel for Song tea culture. Crafted in classic conical douli shape, it features a wide flared rim, steep sloping walls tapering sharply down to a tiny narrow foot ring, creating elegant unbroken flowing lines and thin lightweight body, perfectly matching standard Song conical bowl proportions. The interior and exterior are entirely covered with thick creamy purple-brown glaze, delivering deep warm chestnut hue. Naturally scattered dark iron-green speckles spread randomly across glaze, spontaneous kiln color variation formed during firing without artificial decoration. The rim glaze thins naturally, exposing a narrow pale off-white unglazed band, a definitive mark of Ding kiln inverted firing production. The base foot ring is unglazed, showcasing fine dense pure white clay exclusive to Ding ware, neatly trimmed foot edge with soft natural transition between glaze and biscuit clay. Purple brown glazed Ding wares rank among premium color-glazed Song ceramics, much harder to fire than standard white Ding pieces. Large intact conical bowls of this glaze type are extremely scarce today. This specimen boasts grand well-proportioned silhouette, dignified antique glaze tone, organic kiln speckles, and all tangible production markers matching Northern Song to Jin Ding kiln standards. Untouched original heirloom patina remains intact. It serves as vital physical artifact for studying ancient Chinese tea culture, and makes a stunning display piece for serious collectors, holding outstanding archaeological and market value.
