Only displayed in small special exhibitions focused on northern Chinese kilns, never offered at public auction.description:This matched pair of tiny plum vases were crafted at Jun kilns of Song Dynasty, miniature scholar’s flower vases representing classic Jun porcelain aesthetics. Each piece features a narrow straight mouth, smooth transition from neck to full shoulder, tapering slender body and slightly flared foot ring, presenting an elegant well-balanced silhouette designed for study room flower arrangement. One side of each vase is molded with three-dimensional beast mask relief with distinct facial features, while the opposite side is decorated with circular raised studs; combining two classic Jun decorative motifs on one vessel is quite uncommon. The whole body is covered with thick creamy sky blue opalescent Jun glaze filled with tiny glaze bubbles and natural fine crackle. Large natural rose-purple kiln splashes spread across the body, blending fluidly with blue glaze without artificial painting, embodying the core natural kiln transformation beauty of Jun ware. The thick glaze drips down and stops naturally above the base, exposing coarse reddish-brown biscuit clay. The foot ring is roughly trimmed with ancient burial dirt trapped inside, delivering authentic archaic texture. Jun wares with purple splashes were highly valued since ancient times, and intact matching pairs are extremely scarce today. Miniature vases combining both beast mask and stud relief decorations rank among the rarest Jun specimens. This pair boasts delicate petite shape, gorgeous soft natural kiln color transitions, and all manufacturing characteristics consistent with Song-Jin Jun kiln production. Original burial patina remains untouched without cleaning. They serve as vital physical reference for studying Jun kiln firing technology, and make a spectacular matched display set for serious ancient ceramic collectors.
