Dimensions:Rolled rim long neck vase overall height 13.6cm (5.35 in), archaic bronze style basin overall height 6.7cm (2.64 in), 12th-13th Century A.D.Condition & Provenance:Both vessels are fully intact museum-quality pieces, free of cracks, chips, glaze flaking and any later restoration. All naturally aged gold thread crackles across the glaze remain crisp and intact, and the signature Guan kiln purple rim and iron foot characteristics on mouth and base are fully preserved without wear. Provenance: Former private collection of a veteran Song celadon collector based in Hong Kong, China. Acquired at Toronto Asian Antique Fair in 2010, passed down within one family for over a decade. The pair was only exhibited in private special shows dedicated to Southern Song imperial celadon and has never been consigned to public auction or circulated openly on the art market.Description:This matched pair of two scholar’s wares was crafted at the exclusive imperial Guan kiln of Southern Song Dynasty, including a rolled rim long neck flower vase and an archaic bronze-style basin, the classic matched desk display set for Song literati. The long neck vase features outward folded rolled lip, slender straight neck, plump rounded lower belly and short recessed foot ring. It boasts soft balanced proportions and elegant compact silhouette, perfectly designed for small-scale flower arrangement on scholar’s desk. The matching basin replicates ancient bronze ritual shape with flared rolled mouth, constricted neck and flattened bulbous belly, delivering a steady gentle silhouette. In ancient times, this vessel functioned as a desk waste receptacle while offering remarkable ornamental value. Both pieces are fully covered inside and out with thick, uniform sky-celadon imperial glaze. The heavy creamy glaze carries silky jade-like texture with soft, muted luster without harsh bright surface shine. Organic aged gold thread crackles spread all over each vessel, featuring interwoven fissures with layered density and varied golden-yellow tones, formed naturally by different thermal shrinkage rates between ceramic body and glaze during kiln cooling, the iconic artistic hallmark of authentic Southern Song Guan porcelain. Thin glaze at each rim reveals dark brown clay to form the famous purple rim, while unglazed foot rings expose dark ferruginous iron clay, fully demonstrating the definitive “purple rim & iron foot” identifier of imperial Guan kiln wares. As ceramics solely manufactured for Southern Song imperial court use, intact matched sets of Guan kiln scholar wares are extremely scarce across global collecting circles. This pair carries consistent unified celadon tone, naturally mature antique crackles and perfectly standard vessel forms, all body and glaze technical markers fully align with excavated Southern Song Guan kiln workshop specimens. The flawless preservation status makes this set a top-tier Song ceramic treasure with extraordinary academic research value, decorative display appeal and elite collectible demand among serious American and international Song porcelain collectors.
