拍品描述

Dimensions:Overall height 15cm (5.91 in), 10th-13th Century A.D.Condition & Provenance:The vase is fully intact with no cracks, chips or restorations. All crackle glaze is original from kiln firing. The carved decorative patterns on the whole body stay sharp and complete. Only faint natural wear exists on rim and foot ring accumulated over centuries. The carved lotus petals around base remain undamaged, and original reddish firing patina plus soil encrustation on unglazed base have never been polished or cleaned artificially. Provenance: Private collection of an ancient Chinese porcelain collector based in Hong Kong. Acquired at Toronto Asian Art & Antique Fair in 2016, passed down within one private family for over forty years. It was only displayed for private ancient celadon exhibitions and has never been consigned to any auction house.Description:This elegant pear-shaped Yuhuchun vase is a masterpiece from the northern Song Yaozhou celadon kilns, serving as both decorative display ware and ceremonial vessel in ancient China. It features a canonical silhouette with wide flared mouth, slender constricted neck adorned with layered vertical carved banana leaf patterns crafted with sharp clean carving strokes. The bulbous pear-shaped belly bears the central motif of carved children playing amid intertwined lotus blooms. The chubby playful kids have vivid lively facial features, surrounded by fully stretched lotus flowers and leaves. Craftsmen used varied carving depths to create strong three-dimensional layers, a signature carving technique exclusive to Yaozhou ware. A full band of upward-facing lotus petals encircles the lower body near the foot ring, forming orderly layered decorations with balanced dense and sparse composition. The entire vase is covered evenly with olive-grey celadon glaze, covered in fine natural original crackle texture. The glaze presents soft ancient matte jade luster, with light tan russet edging along rim and foot from kiln firing, a classic Yaozhou kiln feature. The unglazed foot ring reveals dense fine clay body fully covered by original thick reddish kiln rust and natural burial soil patina, with clear circular stacking firing mark at center base. All body, glaze and decorative characteristics perfectly match excavated Song ceramic shards unearthed at Huangbao Yaozhou kiln site in Shaanxi Province. Yuhuchun vases carved with kid-and-lotus patterns from Song Yaozhou kilns are extremely scarce nowadays, and flawless well-preserved specimens with crisp full decorations rarely appear on global antique markets. This vase owns perfectly balanced graceful proportions, fully intact carved motifs, primitive natural crackle celadon glaze, and untouched original kiln marks on base without any post-processing. It is an invaluable physical artifact for academic research on northern Song ceramic craftsmanship, decorative aesthetics and folk customs, also a premium ornament for modern oriental interior spaces. It is highly sought after by ancient porcelain collectors in Hong Kong, Washington State USA and Vancouver Canada, holding outstanding academic, decorative and collectible value.
