Provenance: Former private collection of an ancient‑Chinese‑porcelain collector based in Florida, USA. Acquired at Jakarta Ancient Asian Ceramics Fair in 2012, kept within one family for more than thirty years. It was only shown in private thematic exhibitions of Song‑dynasty tea wares and has never been consigned to public auctions.Description:This black‑glaze tea bowl was made at Jizhou kiln, a representative drinking vessel for the popular tea‑competition culture of Song China. Shaped in classic straw‑hat form, it features flared rim and smoothly tapering wall down to a small compact foot, well‑balanced for handling and tea‑whisking. Interior and exterior are covered by deep lustrous black glaze sprinkled with fine silvery‑brown speckled crystallization. The glaze thins out along the rim creating a distinct russet‑brown band. Unglazed base exposes coarse beige pottery clay with clear wheel‑cut marks, exhibiting typical Jizhou‑kiln firing traits. Black‑glazed bowls were highly favored in Song imperial and literati circles because their dark background beautifully contrasted against frothy white tea. As a major southern kiln, Jizhou produced massive quantities of such tea wares. This example shows standard period form, deep solemn glaze and authentic ceramic characteristics. Surviving undamaged Jizhou tea bowls are collectible artifacts for researching Song tea custom and southern ceramic industry. It suits tea‑room display, academic reference and antique‑collecting, highly appreciated by Song‑porcelain collectors from Florida, Pennsylvania and Hong Kong.
