The carved spiral hair on the head, layered robe folds, hand mudras and detailed feet are all well-preserved. The unpolished raw chisel marks on the statue’s back remain fully visible without later modification. Provenance: Private collection of a veteran Eastern stone sculpture collector based in Florida, USA. Acquired from an antique gallery in Paris in 2002, preserved within one family for over two decades. It was only displayed at private small stone sculpture exhibitions in Miami and has never been consigned to public auctions.Description:This painted sandstone Shakyamuni Buddha in half-lotus pose dates back to Northern Qi Dynasty, a classic stone Buddha sculpture from Qingzhou and Ye city artistic school, originally enshrined as the main deity in ancient Buddhist temples. Complete surviving examples retaining original pigments are extremely rare in today’s market. The statue is carved from a single solid block of fine sandstone. The Buddha features a prominent cranial protuberance with neat spiral hair, soft rounded facial features, slender tranquil eyes and a faint gentle smile, fully embodying the signature mild and elegant aesthetic of Northern Qi Buddhist art. The Buddha sits in relaxed half-lotus posture with the right foot hanging down and left leg crossed. His right hand rises in abhaya mudra, while the left hand rests lightly on the knee. The limbs are proportioned naturally with fluid, soft carving lines. He wears wide, loose monastic robes with cascading layered folds sculpted with varying carving depths. Large sections of original cinnabar red and azurite blue pigments remain on the robe surfaces, muted by centuries of natural weathering without later overpainting. The integrated base is carved with three-dimensional scrolling lotus leaves, seamlessly connected to the Buddha figure. The rear side of the statue retains untouched primitive chisel marks left by ancient craftsmen, unpolished and unaltered. Northern Qi stone sculpture blends Central Asian and Chinese artistic styles, characterized by minimalist gentle lines and ethereal peaceful aura. This statue retains intact original mineral pigments and unmodified stone matrix, carrying extraordinary value for Buddhist art archaeology, stone carving academic research and high-end display collection. It is highly sought-after by veteran antique Buddha collectors across Florida, Paris and Bangkok.
