Dimensions:Mouth Diameter 17cm(6.69in),Overall Height 15.5cm(6.10in),12‑13th Century CECondition & Provenance:The box survives as an original matched set of body and cover, free of cracks, chips and modern restoration.Inlaid ornamentation remains intact;stippled pearl‑ground dots and key‑fret border patterns stay well‑defined. The glaze bears natural age‑related wear with minor localized glaze erosion consistent with ancient ceramic patina. The turned spiral marks on foot ring are sharp, reddish‑brown clay shows authentic aged earthen patina. This piece comes from a private East‑Asian ceramic collection in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,USA.The collector acquired this covered box from an Asian antique gallery in Vancouver in 2008 and kept it long‑term in dark climate‑controlled storage.Complete matched‑set Goryeo inlaid celadon vessels are quite scarce worldwide.Description:This is a classic covered box of Goryeo‑period Korean celadon pottery. It has a generously rounded bulbous body, compressed mouth and short raised foot ring, coupled with domed lid with wide fitting rim and small central knob. The silhouette is solid and well‑proportioned. The vessel employs the celebrated Goryeo inlay technique:carved incised grooves in the clay body are filled with white and black colored slips before overall celadon glaze application. Both lid and main body are densely covered with fine stippled pearl‑ground dot patterns arranged in orderly fashion.Multiple horizontal decorative bands of key‑fret and scrolling geometric motifs run around lid rim, body shoulder and upper foot. The lid center is decorated with carved round floral medallion with concentric framing bands creating strong rhythmic visual order. The whole piece is covered with soft grey‑green celadon glaze with mellow aged matte surface. The unglazed foot ring displays distinct wheel‑turning traces over reddish‑brown body clay,a typical characteristic for Goryeo celadon wares.Goryeo inlaid celadon represents the peak ceramic craftsmanship of medieval Korean peninsula.Pearl‑ground stippled decoration ranks among its most recognizable ornamental styles.Matched original‑cover examples such as this are uncommon on the market and hold great significance for East‑Asian ceramic scholarship as well as collectible appeal.
