Dimensions:Overall Height 13cm(5.12in),Max Belly Diameter 14cm(5.51in),14-17th Century CECondition & Provenance:The jar and its original matching lid remain a complete set without cracks, chips or glaze restoration. The cobalt blue pigment shows rich, stable tone with naturally formed iron rust speckles;all painted patterns including scrolling peonies, sea waves, lotus petals and curly grass retain crisp unbroken lines with no heavy wear or faded pigment. The porcelain glaze is smooth and glossy with even clean pale white base glaze;only faint minor earth patina exists around the mouth rim and foot ring from long-term collection, free of glaze peeling, kiln cracks or pinhole flaws. The eight-point flower motif on the lid top and scrolling vine patterns along the lid edge are fully intact. This antique jar was once part of a private Ming and Qing porcelain collector’s collection based in San Francisco,California,USA.The collector acquired this piece from an Asian antique gallery in Vancouver back in 2010.Ming blue and white small jars with perfectly preserved original matching lids are quite rare on global antique markets.Description:This well-proportioned covered jar is a representative blue and white porcelain vessel made during the Ming Dynasty for daily display and storage. It features a short straight neck, full rounded bulbous belly, shallow foot ring and a matching flat-top lid fired in the same kiln with balanced elegant proportions.Multi-layered blue and white decorative bands cover the vessel from lid to foot:The flat lid is centered with an eight-petal star flower, framed by a continuous band of ruyi scrolling vines along the lid rim.The jar neck is wrapped in two tiers of upward-facing lotus petal borders with neat sharp outlines. The main belly surface is fully covered with interlocking peony blooms, large full blossoms twisting along winding vines.Natural dark iron speckles appear within thick cobalt pigment areas,a signature characteristic of Ming imported smalt cobalt ore.A wide band of layered rolling sea waves runs along the bottom belly, paired with a lotus petal border to create clear layered visual rhythm. All painting strokes are bold and fluid with well-balanced dense and blank composition, paired with soft pale celadon-white glaze and deep dark blue cobalt that delivers strong glassy luster. The interlocking peony pattern stands for wealth and prosperity, while sea wave motifs symbolize stable peace and territorial fortune, both extremely popular auspicious porcelain themes across Ming royal and civilian kilns. The porcelain body boasts dense solid clay and mature firing techniques. The rare survival of its original matching lid and flawless intact condition make this jar a standard reference piece for Ming blue and white porcelain, with outstanding decorative, collectible and academic research value for traditional Chinese study rooms and antique collections.
