Dimensions:Mouth Diameter 21cm(8.27in),Overall Height 8.2cm(3.23in),14-17th century Ming folk enamel ceramicCondition & Provenance:The bowl is fully intact without cracks, chips or large-scale pigment loss. Core painted patterns inside and outside remain complete, only faint natural wear of enamel and light aged dirt exist along rim and foot ring from long-term collection. Clay and glaze are tightly bonded, no restoration or later repainting. This piece was collected by a private Ming enamel porcelain collector based in Miami,Florida,USA, acquired from an antique Southeast Asian art gallery in Kuala Lumpur back in 2018. Fully preserved large bowls decorated with red-green enamel from Ming times are fairly scarce on the global market. This specimen features fully decorated interior and exterior scenes of lotus and mandarin ducks, primitive classic color palette, serving as a benchmark work of Ming folk overglaze art.Description:This large bowl is a classic dual-purpose decorative and daily vessel crafted with Ming red-green enamel technique. It features a wide flared rim, gently curved tapering body and tall raised foot ring, presenting a broad, well-proportioned silhouette with balanced practical and ornamental value. Two thin red enamel concentric lines frame the inner rim as decorative borders. The central interior medallion displays a continuous lotus pond mandarin duck scene: reddish-brown outlines define lotus blooms, vines and rippling water, filled with vivid green enamel for lotus leaves, water plants and duck plumage. A pair of mandarin ducks swim face-to-face within the pond, one rendered in russet red, the other in emerald green, with peaceful relaxed postures surrounded by blooming lotus flowers and floating duckweed, delivering a serene auspicious motif symbolizing harmonious marriage and lifelong companionship. The entire exterior surface is covered with scrolling floral vines in red and green enamel, twisting cloud-shaped branches stretch smoothly interspersed with russet flower blossoms, while a band of rectangular ruyi leaf pendants encircles the lower body. Alternating red and green hues create neat layered decoration, finished off by two thin red enamel lines at the outer rim. The ceramic body bears a soft off-white pale yellow base with matte mild glaze texture. Red and green enamel pigments carry an aged thick primitive texture, paired with concise bold brushstrokes characteristic of Ming folk kiln painting aesthetics. Red-green enamel was the dominant early overglaze technique in Ming Dynasty with complicated firing procedures, so large intact surviving vessels are rare. This bowl carries elaborate unbroken interior and exterior painting with natural ancient color tones, rich folk auspicious symbolism and profound ceramic craft research value, perfectly suited for antique ceramic museum special exhibitions and traditional Chinese antique porcelain private collections.
