No restoration or later added glaze. This artifact was formerly in a Hong‑Kong‑based private collection specializing in early Chinese ceramics, acquired via antique dealer in Toronto in 2019. Well‑preserved Yue‑kiln ram figures from Jin period are scarce, serving as key reference material for Six‑Dynasties animal‑shaped porcelain.Description:This celadon ram figurine was fired at Yue kilns during Jin dynasty. Animal‑form celadon sculptures of Six Dynasties were used for interior display as well as burial grave goods. The ram is modelled in recumbent kneeling posture with raised head, spiraling curved horns, simply but vividly rendered facial features including forehead, ears and beard. Its body is plump and robust, four limbs fold beneath torso, short tail curls upward. Incised lines define muscle contours across the body complemented by stamped dot decorations. The entire piece is covered with characteristic Yue‑kiln yellowish‑green celadon glaze with natural glaze thickness variation, overlaid with fine ancient ice‑crack crazing. The undersides of four feet are unglazed, revealing solid pottery body coated with accumulated burial soil patina. In ancient Chinese culture the ram symbolizes auspiciousness, since the character for sheep shares the same sound as “blessing and good fortune”, making ram a beloved sculptural theme in Six‑Dynasties era. Yue kiln represented the core southern celadon production in early China. This ram merges realistic animal form with primitive elegant ceramic craftsmanship, retaining authentic period features. It delivers valuable evidence for researching Jin‑dynasty Yue‑kiln technology, Six‑Dynasties sculptural art and traditional auspicious folk culture, well‑suited for high‑end ancient‑ceramic private collection and museum‑style exhibition.
