Dimensions: Overall Height 20.7cm (8.15in), 12th to 13th CenturyCondition & Provenance: The vase is completely intact with no cracks, chips, missing sections or restored glaze. Fine natural crackle glaze spreads evenly all over the body, the flowing purple splash kiln transformation is original and layered, the brown aged patina along the rim forms naturally over centuries, the exposed clay on three feet carries primitive ancient texture, and the base clay is grainy with zero modern artificial distressing. This antique Jun ware was first collected by a veteran ancient porcelain collector in Hong Kong, China, then transferred to a private Eastern art collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 2010, and entered the public market in 2024. Complete Song Jun tripod vases with beast mask decorations are extremely rare worldwide, and authentic Song Jun masterpieces like this rarely circulate among American private collections.Description: This tripod zun is a classic decorative porcelain shape from the Song Jun kilns. It features a small flared mouth, contracted neck, full pear-shaped body, symmetric three-dimensional molded beast mask appliqués on exterior walls, and three solid nipple-shaped supporting feet, delivering a robust, full silhouette with soft balanced curves. The whole vessel is covered with thick, creamy moon-white Jun glaze, rich and smooth, fully covered with fine natural crackle formed by hundreds of years of thermal expansion and contraction, a natural signature of authentic Jun ware. One side of the belly bears a large cloud-like kiln-transformed purple-red splash, where purple, blue and moon-white hues blend and flow together with interwoven streaky textures, shifting organically without any artificial alteration, showcasing the one-of-a-kind kiln transformation aesthetic exclusive to Jun kilns. The glaze thins out at the mouth rim, revealing tan-brown clay edge with uneven aged stains accumulated over time. The base is left unglazed, fully exposing pale yellow coarse pottery clay speckled with tiny dark mineral particles, hand-trimmed in a primitive unrefined Song craft style, with concentric circular turning marks at the center of the base, a standard manufacturing feature of folk Jun kilns in the Song era. The raised beast masks on both sides are vividly sculpted with clear eye and brow outlines, and layered glaze thickness creates natural light and shadow contrast against the pale moon-white base glaze. This artifact integrates all core craft characteristics of Song Jun porcelain: thick opaque glaze, natural kiln color transformation, molded relief ornamentation and tripod display vessel design, fully preserving the complete firing, glazing and color-changing techniques of Northern Song Jun kilns. It serves as a key reference artifact for academic research on Northern Jun kiln glaze technology and Song literati decorative aesthetics. It is a top-tier centerpiece for specialized high ancient porcelain collections and qualifies for long-term museum exhibitions themed on China’s Five Great Song Imperial Kilns, possessing extraordinary archaeological value for ancient ceramics, unparalleled artistic merit of natural kiln transformation, and profound research significance for Song Dynasty literati interior furnishing culture.
