Dimensions:Buddha head height 35 cm (13.8 in), maximum width 22 cm (8.7 in), overall height including base 49 cm (19.3 in), 2nd‑4th Century CECondition & Provenance:The stone Buddha head remains largely intact. All major facial features including the urna, spiral hair, mustache and large ears are well preserved. The break at the neck is ancient and original from excavation. The stone surface bears authentic millennia‑long weathering with natural pitting and earth patina. There is no modern restoration, reassembly or re‑carving. Minor old chips along ear rims are ancient damage without man‑made repair. Classified as ancient stone Buddhist sculpture, this artwork left Central Asia decades ago and was long kept in a private collection of Gandhara and Himalayan art in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is accompanied by vintage collection archives, early exhibition records and professional stone‑sculpture appraisal document, mounted on a modern custom‑made black display base.Description:This stone Buddha head is a magnificent surviving example of Gandhara Buddhist art dating to the 2nd‑4th centuries, representing the artistic fusion of Greco‑Roman sculptural traditions and Eastern Buddhist spirituality, occupying a pivotal position within the history of Buddhist iconography. The Buddha possesses an elongated full face with deep three‑dimensional features reflecting Hellenistic naturalism. His half‑closed eyes gaze downward in quiet meditative contemplation. A raised circular urna sits prominently at the center of the forehead, one of the thirty‑two sacred marks of a Buddha. The face retains characteristic curled stylized mustache, high bridged nose and softly modeled lips conveying serene dignity. The scalp is covered with neatly carved tight spiral curls, each lock sharply defined, rising into a prominent ushnisha atop the head symbolizing supreme wisdom and enlightenment. Large pendulous ears with carefully rendered ear canals follow classic Gandhara iconographic conventions. The stone surface carries time‑worn texture formed by long‑term burial and atmospheric erosion. The back retains rough chiseling marks from original carving and the neck shows genuine ancient breakage from antiquity. Gandhara art adapted Greco‑Roman realistic stone‑carving techniques for Buddhist subject matter, serving as tangible physical evidence for ancient East‑West cultural exchange. Large‑scale Gandhara stone Buddha heads with complete intact faces are quite scarce on the global market. This specimen exhibits masterful carving and a powerfully compassionate spiritual presence. It delivers immense academic art‑historical research value alongside striking display appeal, ranking as a highly desirable major Gandhara artifact for private collections and widely sought‑after among Western Himalayan‑art collectors.
