Dimensions:Overall Height 30.5 cm (12.01 in), Mouth Diameter 5.8 cm (2.28 in), Ancient black glaze porcelain from 10th to 13th century Song periodCondition & Provenance:The whole vessel is covered in glossy jet-black glaze with fully intact surface, no cracks, glaze loss, chips or post-kiln restoration. The carved moon and plum blossom motifs on the body are perfectly preserved with crisp unworn carving lines. The inner rim of the mouth bears naturally aged brown glaze layers, and the unglazed base shows dry original clay with primitive wheel-throwing marks and kiln pits, untouched by modern grinding, glaze patching or artificial aging treatments. Classified as pre-Yuan ancient porcelain, this piece was circulated to Hong Kong, previously held in the private collection of a specialist Song kiln porcelain collector based in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. It includes collection records from a vintage antique gallery in Toronto and official appraisal certification for East Asian ancient ceramics, with no post-carved decoration, crack repairs or chemical fake patina modifications.Description:This carved moon plum meiping with black glaze from the Song Jizhou kilns stands as an iconic masterpiece of Jizhou ceramic art, extremely popular among collectors of ancient Chinese porcelain across the United States and Europe, highly sought after by elite Song ware collectors on both America’s East and West Coasts. Crafted in the classic meiping silhouette, the vase features a short straight neck, small flared mouth, full rounded shoulders and a gently tapering lower body leading to a flat base, balanced and elegant in overall proportion with smooth, flowing contours. The entire exterior is coated in Jizhou’s signature jet-black wujin glaze, bright, glassy and deep ink-black with soft subtle luster, evenly layered across every curve, representing the finest glaze quality of Song-era Jizhou production. One side of the body showcases hand-carved exposed clay decoration depicting cold plum blossoms beneath a crescent moon. The slender twisting plum branches carry layered flower blooms with sharply defined petals and stamens, carved with bold, clean cuts. The pale buff exposed clay creates a striking light-dark contrast against the deep black glaze, forming a minimalist poetic composition beloved by ancient Chinese literati. The interior of the mouth is lined with protective brown slip glaze, marked with natural spiral wheel-throwing lines left during hand crafting. The flat base is fully unglazed with pale yellow raw clay, clear hand-trimming spiral marks on the exterior base wall, and tiny original kiln firing indentations across the clay surface covered in authentic natural burial patina. Song Jizhou vases featuring moon plum motifs are extremely scarce on the antique market, and large intact meiping without damage are rarely available for trade; most comparable pieces are heavily repaired or modern reproductions. This untouched original Song vase retains all authentic kiln production characteristics and flawless condition, ideal for long-term special exhibitions at Asian art galleries in Hong Kong and New York, permanent private ancient porcelain collections overseas, and interior styling for Chinese scholar studies or vintage American oriental interiors to capture the quiet, refined literati aesthetic of the Song Dynasty.
