Dimensions:Maximum Width 16 cm (6.30 in), Overall Height 8.5 cm (3.35 in), Ancient Song porcelain set including black glaze tea ware and kiln tool from the 10th–13th centuryCondition & Provenance:The coarse clay saggar is fully intact without major cracks or large missing fragments; rusty earth patina and firing iron speckles on the exterior are original kiln deposits. Minor rim nicks are natural ancient unloading wear with no modern glue or restoration. The enclosed pearl-spot tea bowl stays perfectly nested inside the saggar. Its glossy black glaze and interior milky white pearl speckles are fully preserved with crisp detail, the brown rim band around the bowl mouth is complete, free of glaze loss, cracks or artificial retouching. The saggar base retains raw gritty clay texture with original firing sand grains, untouched by grinding or chemical glaze cleaning. Classified as pre-Yuan ancient Chinese porcelain, this set was circulated through Hong Kong, previously part of a private collection of Song kiln ceramics based in West Kowloon, Hong Kong. It includes collection records from a vintage antique gallery in Toronto and professional appraisal certification for Song Jian ware, with no aftermarket painted white spots, spliced saggar repairs or artificially created burial patina alterations.Description:This intact Song Dynasty Jian Kiln pearl spot tea bowl paired with its original firing saggar stands as an extremely rare specimen-grade tea set, widely sought after in global ancient porcelain collecting circles and highly coveted by elite Song black glaze collectors on both America’s East and West Coasts. The outer vessel is a one-use coarse clay firing saggar crafted in the Song era, shaped as a funnel with wide flared rim and tapering conical base. The clay body is mixed with coarse sand aggregate, coated with rusty brown slip on the exterior and dotted with natural black iron firing stains for a rugged, primitive texture. This standard Jianyang kiln tool shielded tea bowls from direct flame to stabilize glaze formation during firing; surviving complete saggar-bowl matching sets are extraordinarily scarce. Nestled fully inside the saggar sits a classic Jian shu-kou tea bowl covered in thick glossy jet-black glaze. The bowl’s interior is decorated with scattered milky white pearl speckles of varying sizes, round, full and naturally spaced — a rare coveted glaze variation prized for Song dynasty tea competition rituals. A natural brown unglazed rim encircles the bowl mouth, a raw byproduct of the firing process, with thick stable glaze showing no wear or flaking. The saggar’s base exposes unrefined sandy clay with visible firing grit and layered authentic burial patina, never cleaned or polished by human hands. Most surviving Jian tea bowls lack their original kiln saggars; complete undamaged matched sets with intact speckle glaze are barely available on the antique market, most comparable pieces consist of broken saggar shards or standalone damaged bowls. This artifact retains the original factory firing assembly untouched, carrying exceptional archaeological and collecting value. It is ideal for long-term special exhibitions at Asian art galleries in Hong Kong and New York, permanent private collections of Song black glaze ceramics overseas, and styling for Chinese tea studios or vintage scholar spaces to recreate the authentic aesthetic of Song tea-tasting culture.
