It features a wide flared mouth, sloped shallow belly and a tall ring foot, forming a smooth and elegant silhouette. The body is crafted from typical coarse off-white clay used by northern kilns. The whole exterior is coated with creamy white slip glaze that carries a soft matte luster, covered with fine ice crackles developed over hundreds of years. The base foot stays unglazed, with distinct hand-trimming marks left by ancient potters, a signature craft feature of all Cizhou wares. Two wide iron red enamel lines divide the inner wall as decorative borders, enclosing a central hand-painted scene of wild goose swimming among reeds. Ancient artisans used bold, freehand iron red pigment to outline the wild goose, capturing its vivid posture with head raised and wings floating over ripples through simple, unrestrained brushstrokes. Bright emerald green pigment accents water plants and foliage, creating a striking red-green color contrast that fully showcases the raw, lively folk art aesthetic of northern ancient China. Surrounding the goose are ripple patterns and scroll leaf motifs, forming a well-balanced full composition. The overglaze pigments remain well-preserved with almost no fading or peeling. Red and green enamel wares from Cizhou Kiln are the landmark folk painted ceramics of ancient northern China, famous for casual hand-drawn patterns and down-to-earth folk aesthetics. This wild goose bowl boasts standard shape, complete decoration and outstanding condition, serving as a core specimen for researching Song northern painted pottery, with great value for studying ancient daily ceramics and Song folk painting. In the US antique collecting market, complete large-sized Song Cizhou red-green enamel wild goose bowls with clear patterns are extremely scarce, holding superior recognition and market demand among collectors.
