The whole piece is fully covered with thick, even light celadon glaze covered in tiny jade-like speckles, the glaze carries soft subtle luster with no large-scale glaze loss or peeling. Only faint natural age wear can be seen on the rim, no harsh damage at all. A band of reddish-brown clay base is exposed on the foot ring, the clay body is dense and fine, and ancient soil patina naturally formed along the foot edge over centuries. Category: Song Dynasty porcelain, market destination: Hong Kong. This waste vessel comes from the private collection of Mark Chen, a seasoned collector of ancient Chinese porcelain based in Hong Kong. He purchased this artifact at Christie’s Hong Kong Ancient Porcelain Auction back in 2012, with complete original auction catalog, thermoluminescence dating report and professional antique ceramic appraisal certificate fully retained.Description: This light celadon glazed waste vessel fired at Longquan kiln during China’s Southern Song Dynasty is a classic elegant studio ware of Song Longquan celadon. Its shape originates from bronze spittoons of Shang and Zhou dynasties, featuring soft full contours with smooth flowing transitions between each section. The upper part boasts a wide outward flaring mouth, the body curves inward to form a narrow waist, the midsection bulges into a plump rounded belly, and a low outward splayed ring foot supports the whole piece. The overall lines are gentle and elegant with perfectly balanced proportions. The interior and exterior surfaces are uniformly coated with thick mellow light celadon glaze, the glaze layer is rich and full with a soft pale turquoise hue. Tiny pinprick white speckles spread all over the glaze surface, a signature characteristic of Southern Song Longquan wares, delivering subtle jade-like luster without harsh bright sheen. The interior is plain without any decorative patterns, matching the exterior glaze tone perfectly. Only two tiny residual specks left by ancient collectors rest on the inner bottom, which do not compromise the overall condition. The base foot is neatly trimmed; glaze is shaved off the bottom rim to expose the clay body with iconic reddish-brown color, the compact fine clay and natural aged patina along the foot rim deliver distinct authentic period markers. Waste vessels were placed in traditional Chinese studies and tea rooms to hold tea residue and fruit peels, essential practical decorative wares for Song literati. This specimen features flawless uniform glaze, complete original shape, distinct period clay and glaze traits, and excellent conservation condition. It stands as a standard surviving example of Southern Song Longquan light celadon, carrying outstanding ornamental aesthetic value for study display, archaeological research value for Song ceramic history, and elite high ancient porcelain collectible value for global collectors.
