Dimensions: Overall Height 2.8cm (1.10in), Mouth Diameter 6.5cm (2.56in), Tang Dynasty, 7th to 10th CenturyCondition & Provenance: The lid and base of this cosmetic box are original matching set, fully intact without cracks, chips, restorations or warping. The exterior is covered with vibrant green glaze scattered with natural blurred russet brown speckles, the glaze is glossy and translucent with no large glaze peeling or loss. Only faint minor age wear can be seen on the lid rim with no severe damage. The interior and bottom are fully unglazed to reveal pale creamy white pottery clay with fine loose texture, distinct ancient wheel-throwing spiral marks cover the base, glaze drips naturally along the bottom edge with original ancient soil patina. This piece comes from the private collection of David Leung, a respected specialist collector of Tang Sancai wares based in Hong Kong. He acquired this cosmetic box through a private sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Tang Ceramics Session in 2008, complete original auction files, thermoluminescence dating report and official antique ceramic appraisal certificate are fully preserved.Description: This Tang Sancai round cosmetic box with green glaze base and splashed brown spots is a classic cosmetic ware for noble ladies during China’s prosperous Tang Dynasty. It adopts a flat circular mother-son snap-fit structure split into a domed lid and shallow straight-wall base, the fitted rim locks tightly with perfect matching gap. The lid features a gently arched top, while the base holds a shallow cavity, the whole tiny vessel boasts soft rounded contours, specially crafted for noble women to store face powder, rouge and eyebrow pigment in ancient dressing rooms. The outer surface is fully coated with low-temperature lead green glaze with glossy luminous finish, the saturated emerald green base is randomly dotted with varied russet brown speckles that bleed softly into the green glaze, creating vivid natural tiger-skin spotted effect, a classic decorative technique used by folk Tang kilns. The inner cavity remains unglazed, exposing dry fine creamy white pottery clay free of modern dirt or artificial staining. The entire base is bare clay marked with clear concentric wheel-cut spiral lines left by ancient craftsmen, green glaze naturally drips down the foot ring to form a thin glazed border, even ancient soil patina accumulates at the glaze-clay junction to show authentic millennium aging marks. Tang Sancai cosmetic boxes are scarce among surviving Tang artifacts, and complete undamaged matching sets are extremely rare. This specimen features pure vibrant glaze color, naturally distributed speckles, full authentic period markers on clay base and outstanding conservation condition.
