A large unglazed area covers the flat base, glaze drips naturally down the sides with no modern re-glazing or artificial polishing. Category: Tang Sancai pottery, pre-Song ancient ceramics, market destination: Hong Kong. This water pot originates from the private collection of Leo Li, a veteran specialist collector of Han and Tang pottery based in Hong Kong. He acquired this piece at Christie’s Hong Kong Tang Pottery Auction in 2019, complete original auction catalog, thermoluminescence dating report and official antique ceramic appraisal certificate are fully preserved.Description: This miniature green glazed Sancai water pot with raised studs made in China’s Tang Dynasty is a refined literati desk utensil, designed to hold water for ink grinding beside ink slabs. Shaped like a flattened drum, it features a narrow contracted mouth, short neck, full rounded bulbous body and flat base, delivering a compact solid silhouette that is easy to hold. Rows of three-dimensional round studs wrap evenly around the outer wall, each stud coated with warm yellow-brown glaze that creates striking color contrast against the vessel’s rich emerald lead glaze, building vivid layered visual appeal. Thick vibrant green low-temperature lead glaze covers nearly all inner and outer surfaces, the glaze layer varies in thickness and flows vertically to form natural streaks of blended green and amber tones. The entire glaze surface is covered with fine interlocking ice crack craze, a signature natural aging patina formed over more than one thousand years, accompanied by subtle iridescent shell light luster unique to ancient Sancai wares. The mouth rim is neatly trimmed to reveal the iconic orange-red porous pottery clay exclusive to Tang Sancai production. The whole inner cavity exposes raw unglazed red clay with untouched burial soil stains; the wide unglazed base features rough dry clay texture with natural dripping glaze along the perimeter, free of later artificial modification. Small Tang Sancai desk wares are far rarer than large burial figurines, and intact green glazed water pots with complete stud decoration are exceptionally hard to find on the market. This specimen displays unambiguous authentic period markers in clay composition, glaze chemistry, sculpted decoration, craze texture and base finishing, serving as a core physical reference for academic research on Tang low-temperature lead-glazed pottery and ancient Chinese scholar stationery. It carries valuable archaeological research significance for Han-Tang ceramic history, timeless decorative aesthetic value for traditional antique study displays and desirable high-tier collectible value for global ancient pottery collectors.
