Dimensions: Rim Diameter 9.9cm (3.90in), Height 4.5cm (1.77in), Song DynastyCondition & Provenance: Category: Pre-Ming Song Dynasty Porcelain, primary trading hub Hong Kong. This bowl was formerly part of the private collection of Miles Bennett, a respected early Chinese porcelain collector based in Seattle, Washington, USA. He acquired this piece at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Song ceramics auction back in 2017. The heavy iron-rich clay body is fully intact, no hairline cracks, chips, restorations or rim damage. The interior and exterior glaze layers remain well-preserved, with naturally flowing hare’s fur kiln transformations that blend warm russet base glaze and dark blue-black streaks in distinct layered bands. Only faint minor rim wear from centuries of handling exists, no large glaze flaking or loss. The unglazed circular foot displays raw coarse sand clay with clear original firing marks, no later grinding or refinishing on the base. This is an untouched excavated and passed-down antique with no over-cleaning, artificial glaze touch-ups or modern re-firing alterations. Full supporting paperwork is included: original Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction catalog, authentication certificate issued by the Asian Ancient Ceramics Society, and complete cross-border art import documents for US private collection.Description: This conical tea bowl was crafted at the Jian kilns of Fujian during China’s Song Dynasty, the iconic tea vessel designed for the Song imperial tea competition culture. It was hand-thrown from local purple clay with extremely high iron content, creating a dense, weighty ceramic body that feels substantial when held. The bowl features a classic Song conical silhouette with a slightly pinched rim, shallow sloped walls tapering down to a narrow unglazed foot, perfectly proportioned for the Song-era whisked tea ritual. The exterior is coated in rich russet base glaze, draped with vertical streaky hare’s fur kiln streaks mixing black and deep blue hues. The streaks vary in length and spread organically, capped with a soft matte antique patina formed over a thousand years of natural aging. The entire interior is covered in glossy black iron glaze, marked by multiple concentric russet whorled rings radiating outward from the bowl’s center. Gradations in glaze thickness create the natural swirling kiln pattern, entirely unmodified by hand painting. The base retains its raw gritty iron clay foot, with distinct granular texture and ancient firing soil deposits, fully showcasing authentic Song Jian kiln firing techniques. Jian ware tea bowls were tribute wares for the Song imperial court, and hare’s fur glaze is the signature decorative finish of the kiln. Specimens with warm russet base hare’s fur streaks are far rarer than solid black hare’s fur bowls. Undamaged complete bowls with rich natural kiln transformations are highly sought after by American and international collectors of early Chinese ceramics. This piece carries immense historical value for studying Song tea culture and ancient Chinese ceramic firing technology, ranking as a museum-grade intact standard Jian kiln tea bowl circulating in overseas collections.
