Dimensions 25.5 cm (approximately 10.04 in); Jiajing period, Ming Dynasty, 16th centuryCondition and Provenance jar is preserved in overall complete condition, with the mouth, shoulder, body, and lower section remaining intact. The glaze has a mellow surface with natural signs of age and light handling. The cobalt ranges from soft grayish blue to deeper indigo tones, with subtle natural diffusion in selected areas. The interior retains age-related traces from long-term use and storage. The broad unglazed base shows visible wheel-trimming, scraping, contact wear, old staining, and naturally accumulated earthen deposits. From a private collection in Texas, United States, with a history of family ownership overseas.Description substantial blue-and-white jar, standing 25.5 cm, or approximately 10.04 inches, high, is designed in the classic robust profile associated with large mid-Ming storage and display vessels. It has a short straight mouth, thick neck, broad rounded shoulders, a generously swelling body, and a lower section that gradually narrows toward a broad flat base. The overall silhouette is sturdy and confident, giving the jar a strong architectural presence even before the painted decoration is considered. The mouth is framed by restrained cobalt double lines. Around the neck is a sequence of auspicious emblems and floral devices linked by curling ribbon-like forms. Motifs resembling the endless knot, lotus, and other auspicious symbols introduce the decorative program and give the uppermost register a formal, celebratory character. The shoulder is particularly elaborate. Here the painter created a dense brocade-like ground made up of finely repeated geometric lines. Set into this textile-inspired field are circular and lobed reserves containing flowering branches, fruit, and small birds. The contrast between the pale reserves and the densely painted blue ground creates a strong decorative rhythm. Within each medallion, fruit hangs from leafy stems and small birds perch among blossoms, giving the tightly organized shoulder a surprising amount of life and movement. A flowing cloud or ruyi-shaped border marks the transition from the formal shoulder decoration to the more open narrative scene below.
