The original bronze patina remains well-preserved all over the body, naturally covered with subtle aged verdigris in localized areas. The clay gilding on face and neck survives complete with minor gentle wear from centuries of devotion. Most original turquoise inlays are retained, only a tiny handful show slight surface abrasion. The red mineral pigment on the rear lotus branches is largely preserved, and the double lotus base has no chips or missing sections. This piece was originally housed in an ancient Tibetan monastery in Lhasa. It was acquired by a prominent private collector specializing in Himalayan Buddhist statues based in Los Angeles, California in 2012, and has been stored long-term in a climate-controlled professional shrine storage space.Object Description:This grand bronze White Tara statue with turquoise inlay and clay gilding was masterfully crafted in Tibet during the 18th century, representing a pinnacle of Himalayan Buddhist sculptural art, targeted for California market circulation. The sculpture is cast as a single piece via lost-wax casting, massive and substantial at 14.9 kilograms. The deity sits in full lotus posture atop a double-layer lotus pedestal. Her right hand forms the Varada mudra, the gesture of granting peace and blessings to all beings, while her left hand holds the stem of an utpala flower at the chest. Blooming lotus vines extend upward by both shoulders, the iconic iconographic feature of White Tara. The facial features are soft and serene, marked with White Tara’s signature three eyes. Thick clay gilding adorns the forehead urna, eyes, brows and lips, delivering a calm mellow golden tone. She wears an elaborate multi-jeweled crown, and all necklaces, armlets, bracelets and leg ornaments are studded with natural turquoise stones, creating a striking cool-warm color contrast against the aged bronze body. The figure boasts graceful, balanced proportions with a slender waist. Fine, crisp chiseled patterns decorate the scarves and lower garments.
